I teach yoga in Shandford Residential Care Home
in Budleigh Salterton. Their residents are mainly elderly. Details of the home can be found at www.shandford.com
Previous to my teaching yoga I was employed by Devon County Council as a
social worker. I worked at Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital
specialising in working with older people. I really missed working with
this client group which spurred me on to begin working in residential homes.
I find this teaching extremely rewarding. We have a lot of fun, do
seated yoga and I've learned that even small movements are beneficial.
SHANDFORD
My philosophy of compassion, dignity, respect and love for my older students
pays tremendous dividends. At Shandford, for example, we've had great
progress with movement of arthritic joints. All the residents
enjoy a back rub during seated forward bends, hugs and individual attention
to their needs. I get so excited and feel truly privileged to do this
work. My student age range is expanding - 8 years to 102!
YOGA DAY AT
THE VENTURE HALL
I held a Yoga Day at the
Venture Hall, Budleigh Salterton on 3rd May 08. It was a great success.
18 of my students attended. The day was based on the Sun Salutation.
In the morning we explored each individual posture then had a yummy
lunch prepared by Mandy, based on the Otterton Mill cookery book.
Students had time for a walk to the beach or relax then we investigated
different aspects of the sun salutation (surya namaskar). For example, the
posture, affirmation/images, chakra, mantra. We also had several
meditations and we ended with relaxation, (yoga nidra) and visualisation.
It was a lot of work to prepare but really worthwhile. Nicola wrote
"thank you 100% for a wonderful yoga day. It was truly excellent
and really enjoyable. I think the sun salutation has finally clicked!
The food was inspirational and the company great. I've run out of
adjectives - a memorable day. Peace love and joy".
LOOK OUT FOR THE NEXT YOGA DAY TO BE HELD IN THE AUTUMN.
